The wheelbarrow seems to have been known in China at least as early as 230 AD, if not earlier, when it is described in Chinese army specifications. The Chinese wheelbarrow had a single wheel under the center of a boxy structure, unlike the medieval wheelbarrow where the wheel was often far forward.
